Sports Team Logo Design
The Sports Team
The Orcas International Swim Team serves as the high school swim team for the AFNorth International School and a swim club for the NATO affiliated children located in Brunssum, Netherlands and the surrounding area. The swimmer’s ages range from 5 – 18. This sports team logo design needed to appeal to a large range of children and their parents from a variety of countries across Europe and North America. The original logo design being too corporate, this opportunity gave them a fresh start with a fierce new look.
The Team Logo Design Goals
The original logo for this sports team had a “corporate” look. It was an emblem style logo with a ring of flags surrounding two breeching orcas. The team’s leadership noticed some difficulty with recruiting new members. They decided that a new look and an updated website may help boost recruitment. Due to that fact, I developed a more youthful logo for this struggling sports team under the direction of the teams executive council. Team members gave input on how they wanted to logo to look too.
The orca mascot for the team logo was initially hand drawn, then brought to life using Adobe Illustrator. Finding the right balance between friendly and fierce was the biggest challenge in designing this mascot character. Team members and council members alike weighed in on what they would like to see in the design.
Sports Teams Wear Their Logo Designs
One of the major factors in designing a successful sports team logo is considering where that logo will be used. In this case, swim caps and T-shirts topped the list of applications. In addition, The logo design lives on their new website, social media channels, various flyers and newsletters, and other team and fan gear!
